Caniaba Landcare Field Day for New Members on 18 July 2015

In response to the recruitment brochure we distributed to residents of Caniaba, we received responses from a number of people interested in joining the group, so decided to invite them to a Community Education Field Day, which we held yesterday.  This had a dual purpose as Friends of the Koala, with whom a number of us are volunteers, have a second Green Army project starting in early August, and a significant focus of that team will be on Caniaba. As a result of the day, we now have an active membership of about 12 - ranging from early 20s to 70s - and several of the properties involved will be assessed for participation in the Green Army project.

Those involved yesterday said it was a very pleasant experience with some really positive outcomes. Whilst the brief video doesn't give the best idea of this remnant dry rainforest, we spent about an hour down in the forest after a short presentation from Julie Reid about the Green Army project and Bill and me about how this place and the rainforest has been transformed over the past 10 years.  Just as having 2 regenerators working on our land reinvigorated us, because we can now see our way forward with the overwhelming majority of the privets drilled, most of the lantana removed and a large part of the exotic grasses poisoned, the day seemed to have the same impact on our new members.

There'll be a meeting of the group soonish, and everyone liked the idea of working cooperatively on each others' properties over the next year to carry out species identification, weed elimination and regen/reveg work. Caniaba is a really important vegetation area and to be able to improve this long term is something we can control ourselves - a bit different to so much that's going on in the world around us. That's one of the greatest things about the Landcare movement, isn't it?
