What is Landcare?
Landcare is a community-based approach to managing and restoring our environment, and improving the sustainability of our land management activities.
Australia is not immune from the global issue of the loss of biodiversity, the decline in health of our rivers and the challenges of urbanisation.  The Landcare movement formed sporadically at first, as locals formed groups together to deal with problems they couldn't tackle as individuals. There are approximately 4000 groups registered in Australia, and as government support increased, the number of groups also increased. Caniaba Landcare is a member of the much broader Richmond Landcare. The problems that encouraged people to work together in the 1980s and 1990s were too big to be tackled by just one landowner, so a landscape-scale and group approach has evolved to tackle broader issues such as vegetation fragmentation and invasion of native vegetation by weeds.

Why is Landcare needed in Caniaba?
Caniaba is home to Australia’s most iconic species - the koala - and it contains primary koala habitat. The locality also contains significant but fragmented stands of remnant dry rainforest 1. Lismore City Council’s recent vegetation mapping of their area of operations identified remnants of High Conservation Value vegetation throughout the Caniaba area.

How will Caniaba Landcare address issues?
Part of the strength of the Landcare approach is that it involves an integrated approach. This can be partnership arrangements with Rous Water, Caniaba Public School, Friends of the Koala and Richmond Landcare Inc.

Types of environmental Landcare activities include:
·         Bush regeneration and weed control
·         Revegetation
·         Repairing eroding gullies and stabilising streambanks
·         Protecting threatened species e.g. koala
